The Seven Plastic Recycling Codes


1. PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)

Common Uses: Beverage bottles, food containers.

Recyclability: Highly recyclable and often turned into fibers, fabrics, or new containers.


2. HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)

Common Uses: Milk jugs, detergent bottles.

Recyclability: One of the easiest plastics to recycle, often used to make pipes, buckets, and bins.


3. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)

Common Uses: Pipes, medical equipment, clear food packaging.

Recyclability: Challenging to recycle but can be repurposed into flooring or cables.


4. LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene)

Common Uses: Plastic bags, shrink wraps, flexible containers.

Recyclability: Less commonly recycled but used for bin liners and construction materials.


5. PP (Polypropylene)

Common Uses: Bottle caps, food containers, straws.

Recyclability: Recyclable into products like signal lights, ice scrapers, and battery cases.


6. PS (Polystyrene)

Common Uses: Styrofoam, disposable cups, takeout containers.

Recyclability: Difficult to recycle and often ends up in landfills, though some facilities can process it into insulation or light products.


7. Other (Mixed Plastics)

Common Uses: Polycarbonate (PC), nylon, acrylic.

Recyclability: These are typically hard-to-recycle plastics but can be repurposed in specialized recycling facilities.
